I have not read anything by this author in a while and I am glad to have “discovered “ her again. I find myself envious of her life across the street from the cathedral and the restaurant run by her friends where they can worship at matins and evensong and get fish and chips and not have to get the car out. The story is eerily reminiscent of what has been going on in the USA lately with ill-informed people leading with fear and hatred of the “other”. I enjoy the characters and find them realistic. I especially like that Dorothy and Alan are older, as I am, and that they have a respectful relationship. I recommend this book. I normally really enjoy the books in this series but couldn't really get into this one. In some ways it was kind of saccharine and in others quite unbelievable. It didn't flow together or have the same style of writing in the other books of the series. The characters seemed kind of wooden,like they were just going through the motions,and not very believable. Also the pace of the book started out slow and stayed slow rather than building up to a climax. I hope other books in this series don' t continue in this way or I will stop reading them and in the past they have been eagerly received.
